Kenyatta
Johnson, a native of the Point Breeze section of South Philadelphia, represents
the change he wants to create in the community. He has transformed his
life from a youth headed down the wrong path, to a well-educated community
activist on a mission to improve the quality of life for the citizens
of South and Southwest Philadelphia. Through his progressive leadership,
and experience working for the office of State Senator Anthony Hardy Williams,
Kenyatta seeks to empower these neighborhoods by developing a comprehensive
plan to improve their economic, educational and social conditions.
Over the
past 10 years, Kenyatta’s organization “Peace Not Guns” has
touched the lives of over 1500 children, teaching them how to successfully
resolve conflicts without resorting to violence. He has given over 500
community service hours to first time gun offenders, offering them an
opportunity to change the direction of their lives. Dixon House,
South Philadelphia Homes, Barrett Educational Center, Childs Elementary
School, and the Point Breeze Youth Development Basketball League are a
few organizations that have partnered with Peace Not Guns as a means to
maximize on progress being made in these neighborhoods. Kenyatta
Johnson recognizes the importance of ensuring that residents have safer
neighborhoods, access to employment, quality education and homeownership
opportunities. This is why he is committed to new ideas, new leadership
and reforming traditional politics to be more responsible and inclusive
of all people.
